Planning Unit: Lyon County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Livestock Production

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The UK Extension Back to Basics Beef Production program was initiated to support and guide beef producers in implementing fundamental practices to improve production efficiency and profitability. The program focuses on educating producers about key aspects of beef production, including nutrition, genetics, health, and management. This program is being offered regionally Statewide and is supported in part by funding provided by the Kentucky Department of Ag Policy.

Since the program's launch, Producers across the state have made significant progress in achieving our objectives. Several educational workshops and seminars have been conducted to provide producers with the latest information and best practices in beef production. These events have been well-received, with a high level of participation from producers across the region.

In addition to educational events, on-farm demonstrations and field days have been organized to showcase the practical implementation of the back-to-basics approach. Producers have witnessed firsthand the impact of adopting fundamental production techniques on overall herd health and productivity.

Furthermore, the program has facilitated networking opportunities for producers to connect with industry experts, researchers, and other stakeholders. This has allowed for valuable knowledge sharing and exchange of ideas, further enhancing the learning experience for participants.

Challenges and Opportunities:

While the program has seen success in engaging producers and disseminating valuable information, there are ongoing challenges that need to be addressed. One of the primary challenges is ensuring long-term adoption of the back-to-basics approach by producers. It will be crucial to provide continued support and resources to help producers overcome barriers to implementation and sustainably integrate new practices into their operations.

Looking ahead, there are opportunities to expand the program's reach and impact by leveraging digital platforms and technology. Developing online resources, webinars, and interactive tools can enhance accessibility and provide ongoing support to producers, especially in remote or underserved areas.

The UK Extension Back to Basics Beef Production program has made significant strides in empowering beef producers with essential knowledge and practical skills. By continuing to foster collaboration, provide ongoing support, and embrace innovation, the program aims to contribute to the long-term success and sustainability of beef production in the region.
