Agents in the West 8 area noticed many farmers' lack of willingness to incorporate new technology into their farming operations. One technology that has become very popular in recent years is drones. Drones are becoming a huge part of the agricultural industry. With that being said, many farmers are reluctant to use them because they're "new" or "this is how I've always done it", or simply because it is perceived to be expensive and unaffordable.
Agents from KSU as well as specialists from the university collaborated with UK agents to host a drone field day for farmers and producers of the West 8 region. Many topics were discussed like drone safety, applications, how to use them and so forth. A total of 36 people attended the event. It ranged from farmers in the community, to agriculture leaders, to business leaders within the community.
One young farmer took a particular shine to the drone innovations; so much so that he went and bought his own commercial spray drone and plans to start his own commercial application business. Through assistance from UK and KSU agents, This farmer was able to go through all the proper channels and purchase this drone, go through certifications, and start his business in commercial application. He is now serving his fellow farmers of Metcalfe County and surrounding areas.
