According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women in the United States. It's expected to cause about 50,630deaths during 2018.Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is: about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women. 

Over the past five years the Henderson County FCS agent along with many community partners offered the derby tea to focus on health related issues. This event took place the week before the Kentucky Derby. The event also included a fashion show featuring local merchant’s accessories on models from the community to add a touch of glitz to the program and gave a sense of self-esteem to participants. 

This year’s event focused on Colon Cancer Prevention. The event offered information on prevention and detection for a local Gastroenterologist. 

The goal of the program was to educate on what colonoscopies are and recommendation on when to get them and to talk about taking care of a person overall health.

An evaluation was competed by participants. 64 individuals completed the evaluation. 49 of them currently receive a colonoscopy. 62 were inspired to change their overall health. After the program, 46 said that they would be getting colonoscopies.  One participate stated, “My mom had colon cancer, but today’s program really put it in writing.”
