The Campbell County Cooperative Extension Service hosted a cleanup site for the 2018 Ohio River Sweep on Saturday, June 16, 2018. The Ohio River Sweep is a riverbank cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and many of its tributaries. The Ohio River Sweep is an important regional event which addresses a global problem: plastics in oceans. This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states. The Ohio River Sweep is coordinated by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) and other state and environmental agencies like the Extension Service from Pennsylvania to Illinois. 25 volunteers, including 12 students collected 570 pounds of litter at Pendery Park in Melbourne, KY. Since 2010, 195 volunteers have collected over 12,000 pounds of litter from the banks of the Ohio River through River Sweep hosted by the Campbell County Extension Service. To further address the plastic pollution problem, the Campbell County Extension Agent for Natural Resources and Environmental Management provides educational programs and recycling opportunities to schools to address the KY Academic Standard that indicates students will understand that consumer actions (e.g., reusing, reducing, recycling) influence the use of resources and impacts the environment. Schools that participated in educational program are eligible for the ABC (A Bench for Caps) Partnership. This year, Reiley Elementary and Holy Trinity Schools participated in educational programs then collected and recycled 1000 pounds of plastic caps into four, “Buddy Benches” for their schools. These benches foster friendship on the playground to eliminate loneliness. Since 2015, four schools have collected and recycled over 2000 pounds of plastic caps into seven benches for their schools through the partnership with the Campbell County Extension Service and Green Tree Plastics.
