Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Plan of Work: SNAP Education

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Teaching kids about healthy eating and making nutritious food choices can be a challenge. The Hopkins County Cooperative Extension Service collaborated with the Hopkins County Health Department in bringing healthy snack choices to the students of West Broadway Elementary School.  This program was called the “Food for Thought” Nutrition Tasting Program.  Every week during the month of March, elementary school students received a healthy snack sample that they could try during their lunch time.  The healthy snacks included the following: turnips with ranch dressing, a smoothie, pumpkins muffins, and snap peas with ranch dressing.  At the end of the month, the students completed an evaluation for the “Food for Thought” Program.  Out of the 371 students who took the survey, 91% of the students answered that they had tried at least one food that they had not tried before.  The students were also asked if they had eaten one of the foods again since trying it in school.  64% of the students responded that they had eaten one of the foods again since the program.Out of all the foods taste tested, the pumpkin muffins were the favorite food among the kids with 68% of the votes.
