In 2018, the Ohio County 4-H Shooting Sports Education Program was established. Three adult 4-H Shooting Sports coaches were recruited and certified as Trap Coach, .22 Rifle Coach, and Program Coordinator.  Four Teen 4-H Shooting Sports leaders have received training to assist the certified coaches in conducting the meetings. Youth development is the number one goal of the program and provides an effective tool for human growth and development for youth and adults. The program introduces the valuable life skills of safe and responsible use of firearms. Shooting Sports trains youth to handle and shoot firearms safely while teaching leadership and responsibility in a non-formal environment. “In 4-H Shooting Sports no one but the child can shoot in a competition, their success depends on commitment and practice.” (Shooting Sports Coach) State trained county volunteers conduct all of the club meetings.  During the past year, the 4-H Shooting Sports club has generated funds totaling over $2000 designated to establishing the program, rifle stands, and program material. The 4-H Shooting Sports program provides youth an opportunity to learn safety and marksmanship in a supportive and caring environment. The 4-H Shooting Sports program is collaborating with the Ohio County Park with providing practice facilities and meeting rooms for the youth to practice. Thirty-six youth completed six-hours (216 hours total) of educational training to participate in the 4-H Shooting Sports program. The club has participated in numerous 4-H Shooting Sports meets across the state. Parents share the youth’s enthusiasm in the program and attend all trainings and meets with their children. “This is one 4-H event that I can participate in with my child, we are having fun while learning new things about guns.” (parent) Ohio County 4-H registered 26 youth to compete at the 2018 Kentucky 4-H Shooting Sports competition. The competition allows the youth to see the results of their practice and reinforces the importance of dedication – both very critical life skills.
