Success StoryBasics of Air Fryers

Basics of Air Fryers

Author: Jill Harris

Planning Unit: Todd County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Plan of Work: Enhance Life Skills and Build Consumer Awareness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Air fryers are one of the most popular kitchen appliances, owned by approximately 60% of American households in 2023. They are expected to continue to grow in popularity because they are innovative, convenient, a healthier cooking method than deep frying, relatively small and affordable, available in a variety of sizes, and many offer multiple cooking methods.

To help consumer choose an air fryer that meets their needs, learn how to use the one they have, and the pros and cons of purchasing one, the Todd County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences offered a class to Todd County Homemakers and the public.

Eleven people attended the Air Fryer class, including four lesson leaders who taught the class to their homemaker club members.  Thirty-one end-of-meeting evaluations were returned.

As a result of the class, 77% learned what an air fryer is and how it works; 74% understood more about the pros and cons of buying an air fryer; 61% gained knowledge of how to use and maintain an air fryer; and 84% said they intended to use an aid fryer to make healthier recipes.

When asked the most important thing they learned from the program and would apply to their life, participants commented:

"I may consider buying an air fryer to simplify my food preparation for healthier options and convenience."

"Safety, unplug, place on something, use oil."

"Use my air fryer more and not be afraid to try it. Healthier eating."

"I had put mine away to give away, after new information, I will give it a “give it” another chance."

"Try to use leftovers."

"This is so motivating. Now I want to read my manual thoroughly and try it out more often. Plus join Facebook Air Fryers groups and try those recipes and/or recommendations."
