Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Leadership and Volunteer Engagement

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association (KEHA) is a dedicated volunteer organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for families and communities through leadership development, volunteer service, and education. Local and state Cooperative Extension professionals partner with KEHA to provide research-based education and guidance as members design and implement impactful educational programs and projects. Strong community leadership is vital for sustainability and development, helping to fortify families and foster community growth.

County homemaker organizations offer valuable leadership opportunities for members, whether through holding office, teaching lessons, chairing activities, or engaging in various local associations. Most importantly, these organizations cultivate companionship and lifelong friendships among their members.

Recently, the Louisville Area Family and Consumer Science Agents transformed the structure of the Homemaker leader lessons. Previously, FCS agents traveled to seven counties to deliver these lessons, which were then taught by members in their individual clubs. However, declining participation prompted a reevaluation of this approach. The result was the creation of a centralized one-day Homemaker leader lesson seminar. This new format featured four engaging lessons and provided lunch for participants. As a result, attendance more than tripled, resources were utilized more efficiently, and everyone's time was better spent.

Evaluations revealed that participants particularly enjoyed the camaraderie and the chance to connect with others from the Louisville Area. Many comments echoed a shared appreciation for the learning opportunities and the time spent fellowshipping with fellow homemakers.
