Plan of Work: 1. Local Foods Grow Local Dollars

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Morgan County Extension Council volunteers are actively engaged in organizing and supporting “Market in the Park” to inspire a “grow local, eat local, buy local” mentality that celebrates our community’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, while fostering economic growth within Morgan County.

Traditionally, conducted the first Saturday in August at West Liberty’s Old Mill Recreational Park, the event brings together over fifty Farmers Market members, local artisans, craftspeople and musicians to provide a space where the community can easily recognize and access locally produced foods and goods.

Due to thunderstorms, heavy rains and high temperatures, this year’s event had to be relocated to the Morgan County Wellness Center at the last minute.  CEC members displayed excellent leadership skills in adapting to change, communicating with vendors and public, and networking with local officials/organizations.

While a few attendees commented they missed the “ambiance” of the outdoor park, all were grateful for the air conditioned facility.

Results of this event include:

•Increased support for local Farmers Market as evidenced in t shirt sales and followup  attendance at the market

•New marketing outlet made available for many home based entrepreneurs

•Approximately $35,000 generated for the local economy and sellers

Many long time vendors commented that they saw a significant increase in their sales.

Leaders and many attendees applauded organizers for creating a safe community event and appreciation for being able to shop in person locally.
