We are blessed in Grayson County with a local hospital that holds patients and community as a top priority. Over the past several years, FCS Extension in Grayson County has built a strong partnership with Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center. One of the many programs supported by the Women’s Auxiliary in the hospital provides hand made sock monkeys to all children undergoing surgery. This program has been implemented for decades, but their stock was running low and they were at risk of not being able to continue the program.

In response to this critical need at our local hospital, the Grayson County FCS Agent and Extension Homemakers worked with a hospital volunteer to schedule a Sock Monkey Assembly Class and opened it to the community. This program went viral with nearly 200 shares on social media alone! Twenty-five people attended the first class where everyone had a job to cut, sew, stuff, or stitch monkeys.

After two engaging classes, we successfully created 40 additional sock monkeys, ensuring that each child can receive a soft companion during their hospital stay. The enthusiasm and teamwork displayed by volunteers exemplify the spirit of our community, transforming a simple act of sewing into a meaningful gesture of support for families during challenging times. These sessions not only revived the supply of these cherished toys but also fostered a sense of community and purpose among participants. This collaboration has strengthened community bonds and highlighted the power of collaboration in making a difference.

Group classes, like the one above, have a profound positive effect on mental health and well-being. Engaging in collaborative activities fosters social connections, reduces feelings of isolation, and promotes a sense of belonging among participants. The act of creating something together not only enhances creativity but also provides a therapeutic outlet for stress and anxiety. Participants often leave feeling a renewed sense of purpose and accomplishment, as they contribute to a meaningful cause. This shared experience not only improves individual mental health but also strengthens community ties, creating a supportive network that benefits everyone involved.
