Wolfe - Breathitt Farm and Home Safety Field Day

Author: Jessica Morris

Planning Unit: Wolfe County CES

Major Program: Emergency Disaster Preparedness

Plan of Work: Agriculture Production, Diversification, & Sustainability

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Each year multiple accidents occur in the home setting as well as on the farm. While these accidents range in severity we can all do our part to take measures to reduce the occurrence of those. Additionally we can take measures to prepare ourselves for natural disasters that are occurring to a greater magnitude than ever before.

The Wolfe County Extension Office along with the Breathitt County Extension office partnered together with Wolfe and Breathitt Farm Bureau to host a field day to prepare people for different scenarios that occur in our area. Partnering with us to provide educational opportunities and stations were:

-Holbrook Equipment (Completing regular scheduled maintenance to cut down on injuries and accidents)

-YPK (ATV and 4-wheeler safety)

-Raising Hope / Kentucky Dept. of Agriculture (roll over tractor simulation)

-Carson Livestock (Livestock handling and safety)

-The National Weather Service (knowing how to read the weather statements and what those warning/watches really mean)

-Wolfe and Breathitt SNAP ED Assistants (food safety)

-Breathitt FCS (Pet safety)

-Wolfe ANR (Look alike Chemicals)

This year to host our event at the Hazel Green Park in Wolfe County. The event has grown over the past few years and we were pleased to have 130 in attendance for the event. Participants could choose to do the home track comprised of (Look -a -Like chemicals, pet safety, food safety and being weather aware) or they could complete the farm track which focused on (regular maintenance, livestock safety, roll over simulator and livestock safety). Participants of each track rotated through each of the stations and listened to a prepared presentation on each of the topics.

Of surveyed participants at the event,

  1. 100% of attendees stated that they had learned something that will positively impact their farm and home safety
  2. 100% of participants received a complimentary smoke detector for their homes.
  3. 100% of participants indicated that they will implement a safety technique that was demonstrated/taught at their homes and farms

This is a great event and partnership that we hope to continue to grow and expand to reach new and more diverse audiences in their homes and on their farms.
