Creative Technology at William Wells Brown Elementary

Author: Genaea Sarantakos

Planning Unit: Fayette County CES

Major Program: Science, Engineering, and Technology

Plan of Work: Build Engaged and Empowered Communities

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Fayette County 4-H established a relationship with William Wells Brown Elementary in 2023 with 4th grade instructors and the 21st Century Coordinator. For the past year we have been providing hands-on learning experiences in STEM to target this Title I school and community’s needs.

Title I is a federal program that supports schools in FCPS that are above 50% free/reduced lunch status. The funds help increase family engagement and provide extra instructional services and materials for all students.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program (CCLC) is a U. S. Department of Education initiative, funded by grants to schools, youth organizations, and community-based groups. It aims to offer children enhanced educational opportunities after school in a secure environment. Authorized under Title IV, Part B of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the program aims to provide academic support, a variety of services, and educational resources to students and their families. It plays a crucial role in bridging achievement gaps and enhancing student performance through engaging activities.

Fayette County 4-H is part of Apple's Community Education Initiative (CEI), which was launched in March 2024 to expand coding, creativity, and career opportunities to learners of all ages, particularly those underrepresented in technology. Apple collaborates with schools, educational institutions, and community organizations worldwide, offering hardware, scholarships, financial support, educators, and access to Apple experts to enhance student learning through technology.

In July, 4-H Agent Genaea and program assistant Landon, spent time with The Promise Academy at William Wells Brown Elementary School delivering a creativity workshop using the 30 iPads Apple has provided us. Students were able to explore creative applications including GarageBand, iMovie, Keynote, Freeform, ARMakr, and Reality Composer to produce projects and present their products. Their projects were extremely unique and creative, expressing their own interests and artistic expression through the exploration of new technology. Each youth were supported and celebrated in their presentations by staff and students. We are so proud of their hard work, creative minds, and confidence to present!
