Success StoryBarren County 4-H Kick-Off Carnival

Barren County 4-H Kick-Off Carnival

Author: Paula Tarry

Planning Unit: Barren County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: 4-H and Youth Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Why should your child be involved in 4-H? A quote from Mollie Webb, Barren County 4-H member and KY State 4-H President 2023-2024 may say it best “Of all of the extracurricular activities I participated in, 4-H helped me to develop the greatest number of important qualities that I use. From working with my peers to accomplish our goals to developing my skills through the feedback of leaders and judges, you are provided the ability to develop your skills and your person overall.”

The Barren County 4-H Kick-Off Carnival is a great way to connect with parents, students and the community. Flyers, explaining about 4-H Clubs, time and location of the event were sent to all youth in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Electronic billboards, radio interviews, local cable tv stations, newspaper articles, social media news, social media post and past and present 4-H members were used to advertise

The 500 people lined up from the front door to the street to visit each of the twenty-two 4-H booths representing community, county and project 4-H clubs and programs. They registered to get additional information about the 4-H club meetings. The attendees also had a 4-H Carnival pass to get signed at each booth that made them eligible for door prizes and refreshments. When the clubs met letters were sent to everyone who requested information and the response was overwhelming as many new members have enrolled in clubs, programs and camp.

In addition to new 4-H members, the 4-H Kick-Off Carnival has provided new 4-H volunteers, leaders, judges and marketing for the Barren County 4-H Program.
