Buttercup Spray Program

Author: Gary Hamilton

Planning Unit: Montgomery County CES

Major Program: Forages

Plan of Work: Production and Economic Challenges Facing Livestock Producers

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Pasture forages provide the majority of the nutrients for Montgomery County beef cattle & other livestock. Due to weather conditions, winter feeding areas & in some cases over grazing, weeds such as Buttercup since 2020 have become a major problem in many pastures. These weeds compete with & reduce the availability of our desired grazing forages. The Montgomery County Extension District Board purchased a special sprayer  in 2020 for the ANR Agent to make available to Montgomery County farmers to help combat pasture & hayfield weed problems. Over the last 4 year we have conducted a Buttercup Spray Program. Since 2020, 140 Farmers participated in this weed control demonstration program and sprayed 2920 acres of pasture to control buttercup as well as poison hemlock and thistles.
