Planning Unit: Clinton County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Livestock, Poultry, & Crops

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Clinton County 4-H Farm Field Day was more than just an educational outing; it served as a vital platform for sparking interest in agriculture among young students. By engaging with both youth and adult leaders at various educational stations, students gained firsthand knowledge about the intricacies of farm life, from understanding the care of farm animals to learning about the machinery that supports farming operations. The experience offered a unique, interactive approach to agricultural education, emphasizing the importance of local crops and sustainable practices.

At the culmination of the event, the "Farmer's Market" provided a delightful and educational experience where students could taste a variety of healthy recipes from the Plan.Eat.Move. initiative. This activity not only highlighted the flavors of locally grown produce but also instilled an understanding of food origins and production processes.

The decline in the number of farms, as reported by the CEDIK 2022 Census of Agriculture Data, underscores the critical need for initiatives like the Farm Field Day. By sparking conversations about careers in agriculture, the event aimed to inspire the next generation of farmers and agribusiness professionals. Moreover, it highlighted the rich opportunities available through 4-H programming, which can provide students with the foundational skills and knowledge to pursue further education and careers in the agricultural sector.

Through these efforts, Clinton County 4-H continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing an appreciation for agriculture and encouraging future leaders in the field, helping to combat the challenges faced by the local farming community.
