Records sent at 4-H Camp

Author: Melissa Schenck

Planning Unit: Washington County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Increasing life skills education and leadership excellence for youth and families

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According the the American Camp Association young people who attend camp believe that camp helped them to make new friends (96%), helped them feel good about themselves (92%), and do things they were afraid to do at first (74%). 70% of parents who send their kids who camp said that camp helped their child gain self-confidence.

In an effort to promote these, and other positive examples of self efficacy to youth in Washington County, the Washington County 4-H has strengthened their commitment to the camping program and put increased emphasis in getting kids to camp who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. 100% of youth who attended 4-H camp with Washington County received some sort of scholarship discount and 7 full ride scholarships were provided to youth identified by their school and FRYSC as "at risk".

Following the start of school Washington County Middle School FRSYC Jesse Mattingly reported, "I can't tell you how good camp has been for (child's name removed for privacy). This time last year he had 2 discipline referrals and he doesn't have any now! His whole attitude has changed and he's telling younger students about 4-H Camp and that he's applying to be a teen counselor next year!"

This year, the Washington County 4-H took 62 individuals to camp, the 2nd highest camping population from the county and the highest record in over two decades. 31% of those individuals were first time campers. 93% reported they plan to return to 4-H Camp.
