According to the National Council on Economic Education, a high percentage of youth do not understand the concept of money and are not taught financial information to the degree needed. To meet these needs, the Campbell County Cooperative Extension Service partnered with the Newport High School Youth Service Center to conduct the 4-H Reality Store Program. The 4-H Reality Store Program is a hands-on financial education activity that gives students the opportunity to explore careers, lifestyle choices and money management. Adult volunteers work the different booths such as housing, transportation, groceries, and child care: where students spend their monthly salaries based on career choices. This program reached 175 high school teens and 32 community volunteers who manned the different booths. On written evaluations, 93% responded that they learned the difference between needs and wants and what it costs to maintain the lifestyle that they want to have in the future. They also reported that child care expenses was what surprised them the most. For many of the adult volunteers this was their first exposure to the Cooperative Extension Service and for being a 4-H volunteer. Programs like the 4-H Reality Store, help participants to be beyond ready for life and everything that comes with it.
