Major Program: Nurturing Families (general)

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Washington County reports that 29% of its residents have some form of hypertension and report being physically unhealthy at least 5 days a month.

To combat these numbers the Washington County Family Consumer Science agent and the SNAP-Ed Program Assistant offered a family cooking and nutrition series that paired parents and children in the learning process.

This group met weekly over the course of a month.   The information taught was from the ‘Healthy Choices for Everybody’ curriculum.

At the end of the program 94% of participants showed improvement in one or more nutrition practices, i.e. plans meals, makes healthy food choices, prepares food without adding salt, reads nutrition labels or has children eat breakfast.  Participants also had hands-on experience in practical skills including measuring, safe knife handling, and food safety.
