Plan of Work: McCracken County Residents and Youth Acquiring Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Kentucky State Fair is the pinnacle event for 4-H members, showcasing the hard work and dedication put into their annual projects. 4-H project work is designed to engage youth in hands-on learning, guided by the following principles: (a) work is centered around the member's interests, (b) supported by an adult volunteer project leader, (c) focused on attainable and measurable goals, (d) recorded for reflection and growth, and (e) involves at least six hours of project-based instruction (National 4-H Council, 2013).

In 2024, Kentucky 4-H members exhibited and competed in 6,612 projects at Cloverville during the State Fair, highlighting the dedication and effort they invest in their learning. McCracken County youth contributed 27 projects, collectively investing over 162 work hours.

According to the 4-H Thriving Model, participation in events like the Kentucky State Fair provides an invaluable opportunity for youth to practice life skills and build connections. The model highlights several benefits for youth involved in 4-H:

  • Skill Development: By participating in core curriculum project work from the county or club level to the state fair, youth can deepen their knowledge and skills in areas they are passionate about.

  • Sense of Belonging: At the Kentucky State Fair, youth connect with others who share their sparks and interests, fostering a supportive environment.

  • Positive Relationships: Through engagement with caring 4-H agents, specialists, and volunteers, youth build strong, meaningful relationships that encourage growth and learning.

This powerful combination of hands-on learning, connection, and mentorship helps Kentucky 4-H members thrive, setting the stage for success not only at the State Fair but in their future endeavors.
