In the fall of 2023, Owsley County 4-H embarked on an exciting journey with the 4th graders at Owsley County Elementary. Each month, we introduced STEM-based lessons designed to engage students and foster a deeper understanding of science and agriculture. One standout lesson focused on the lifecycle of a pumpkin, featuring a special guest: "Jack," the class pumpkin.

This hands-on experience began with the class receiving their very own pumpkin, which they affectionately named Jack. This simple yet impactful initiative not only educated students about biology and agriculture but also instilled a profound sense of responsibility and connection to nature. Throughout the school year, students observed Jack’s transformation as he progressed through his lifecycle. They learned about the roles of decomposition and the importance of soil health as they watched Jack slowly rot and return nutrients to the earth. This was not just an observation; it was an immersive lesson in ecology. As the class delved into the pumpkin lifecycle, they explored various related topics, including agricultural careers, delicious recipes, and even sampled pumpkin dip—a first-time experience for many. The joy of tasting something new opened discussions about healthy eating and the versatility of pumpkins in our diets. When Jack began to sprout seeds, the students eagerly cared for the new pumpkin plant, nurturing it until it was ready to be transferred from the classroom container to the school garden. This transition marked a significant moment, as Jack now stood proudly as a flourishing plant for the entire community to see.

Fast forward to the beginning of the 2024 school year: Jack had returned, transformed into a perfect pumpkin on the vine. The now 5th graders harvested the pumpkin, ready to pass the legacy on to the new 4th-grade class. This initiative has sparked a sense of community and continuity, fostering a tradition that we hope will thrive at Owsley County Elementary. "Pumpkin Jack" has not only become a symbol of learning but also a cherished connection between generations of students. As we look to the future, we are excited to cultivate many more "Jacks," ensuring that the spirit of exploration and education continues to flourish for years to come.
