Introduction to Self Defense Workshop

Author: Keller

Planning Unit: Hickman County CES

Major Program: Build Engaged and Empowered Communities – General

Plan of Work: Improve the stability, resiliency and capability of individuals through life skill development.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Based on feedback from community members, self defense is a topic many have interest in for practical reasons.  This introductory program developed by Mike Keller (Hickman Co FCS) in conjunction with community partners gives a general overview of self defense terminology and perceptions, while giving historical examples and backgrounds of martial arts practices.  Following the speaking portion, participants were given an opportunity to try some of the basic moves intended for separation and getting away from an attacker.  Topics included: observation of state level regulations relating to self defense, key components such as being aware of surroundings, distinguishing 'reasonable force' from excessive force, possible legal ramifications, and simple movements with an explanation of logic behind the moves.  *ALL INFORMATION WAS GIVEN WITH THE STATEMENT OF PRESENTER NOT BEING A MEMBER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OR LAW PROFESSIONAL*

Seven community members attended, including one who attended a previous session in September of 2023.  Participants expressed gratitude for the lesson and interest in additional workshops.
