Down Syndrome of the Heartland

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Working with the Down Syndrome of the Heartland here at the Hardin County Extension Office. The families get to cook together and have social skills. 

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

The cooking class has gotten so much attention that The Down Syndrome of the Heartland is being featured in the New Enterprise on every fifth Friday. They have their section with pictures of them cooking together and having social skills. It is a joy seeing them cook and have fun while doing it. During the summer there is a cooking camp for them here at the extension office which is always a lot of fun. Parents have stated that these classes are very helpful and the recipes are being used at home. The confidence of each participants has improved when aske, "do you think they can make this at home". Hearing the "YES" is assurance that the classes are working and they are learning.

The participants are learning knife skills, temperature reading, and cutting skills.
