Success StoryStatewide Horticulture Agent In-Service Training

Statewide Horticulture Agent In-Service Training

Author: Adam Leonberger

Planning Unit: Franklin County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Commercial

Plan of Work: Increase best practices for urban agriculture, natural resources & local food systems

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The C1 and C2 County Extension Agents for Horticulture, in partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, recently hosted a successful statewide in-service training for horticulture agents. This event, held on September 10-11, 2024, in Lexington, Kentucky, brought together a diverse group of agents and specialists from across the state to share knowledge, network, and learn about the latest developments in horticulture.

The training was designed to provide agents with the tools and resources they need to effectively serve their communities. Topics covered included new research findings, pest and disease management strategies, sustainable gardening practices, and emerging trends in the horticulture industry. Over 49 participants  had the opportunity to attend informative presentations, engage in hands-on activities, and tour state-of-the-art research facilities.

One of the highlights of the training was a visit to the University of Kentucky Horticulture Research Farm, where agents had the chance to observe ongoing research projects and learn about the latest innovations in fruit production. Additionally, participants visited Evan's Orchard, a local fruit farm, to gain insights into commercial fruit production practices and continue networking.

The training also provided a valuable platform for agents to connect with one another and share their experiences. By networking with colleagues from different regions, agents were able to learn about best practices, identify potential collaborators, and strengthen the overall effectiveness of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. The following summarized comments from a presenting state specialist best summarizes the specialist/agent training sessions:  "Thank you for inviting me to speak to the horticultural agents. I've had the pleasure of doing this a few times now, and I'm always impressed by their enthusiasm and passion for their field. It's clear that horticultural agents bring a unique perspective and energy to their work."

The success of this statewide in-service training is a testament to the commitment of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service to providing high-quality education and support to horticulture agents throughout the state. By equipping agents with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, the Extension Service is helping to ensure that Kentucky's communities have access to the information and resources they need to thrive.
