Explore Gunpowder Creek

Author: Rex McBride

Planning Unit: Boone County CES

Major Program: Wildlife Habitat and Damage Management Education

Plan of Work: Environmental awareness and improvements

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Over 30 participants explored gunpowder creek on June 2, 2018. Participants were encouraged to bring kayaks/canoes, or rent one from our local marina, "The Knot". The Extension Service partnered with the Boone County Conservation District, and SD1 to provide education about the ecology, and history of the creek and surrounding areas, as well as a demonstration of aquatic sampling methods by seining, dip netting, and electro-shocking. Participant responses to the post-questionnaire included increased knowledge and awareness of concerns with water quality and stream health in an urbanizing area, increased interest in utilizing local waterways for recreation and exercize, and that they would return to the marina, increasing their business.
