Addressing Estate Planning and Heir Properties

Author: Jeremy Williams

Planning Unit: Harlan County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Strengthen Community, Leadership and Economic Development in Harlan County

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Due to inadequate estate planning, Harlan County has seen a large number of heirs property issues.  With the lack of wills, these heirs properties are created when family members pass away leaving those who inherit the land and unsure future.

The Harlan County Extension Service with the support of the Harlan County Extension Council obtained grant funding of $2,200 from Kentucky State University to co-host a Will Clinic and Heir Property Education Program with Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network (LiKEN). LiKEN obtained attorneys to inform and work with attendees.

The Extension office, County Extension Council, and LiKEN made public announcements via newsletters, newspaper, radio, email, and social media to inform Harlan Countians about this no cost program. Fifteen attended the program.

Fifteen citizens learned about Estate Planning and Heir Properties while twelve completed a legal will, at no charge, during the program.  The program saved attendees more than $7,000.
