Teaching kids to cook is a skill they will always carry with them for a lifetime. Many kids must make their own food during the summer, and the one-day cooking school was provided to give kids the opportunity to learn how to cook and most importantly, learning proper techniques and food safety.
The Super Star Chef One Day Cooking School, Kneads a Little Dough, taught kids how to make three kinds of dough. The kids learned to prepare buttermilk biscuits, homemade pizza dough and apple tart. Kids were taught food safety along the way including using glo germ to stress the importance of hand washing. Fourteen kids attended the 5-hour cooking school in July, at the Graves County Cooperative Extension Service.
The kids were given a pre-test and post-test to see how much they learned. There were five cooking skills and knowledge areas evaluated. All five areas showed an improvement in knowledge from the start of the cooking school.
· 100% of the kids reported that they learned something new that would make them feel more confident in the kitchen.
· 94% of kids said they would prepare the recipes at home.
· 86% of kids reported that they thoroughly enjoyed the cooking school.
Many of the kids asked when the next cooking school would be because they would love to attend. The parents and guardians expressed their appreciation for the cooking school being offered as the kids were excited to attend. It was shared with the leaders that one kid immediately went to the grocery so that they could make pizza for their family that night.
The night of the cooking camp a mom sent a message that her daughter wanted to go straight to the grocery and make dinner for her family & grandparents. She made the homemade pizza.
A few nights later another mom shared pictures that her daughter was making homemade biscuits for supper.
