Describe the Issue or Situation
Lake Cumberland area residents have expressed a growing interest in learning more about diverse cultures and their culinary traditions. Many community members have been looking for opportunities to explore different styles of cooking and expand their culinary skills. However, they have lacked access to affordable, hands-on cooking classes that also provide cultural education.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable)
To address this need, the Adair County Extension Office organized a Cajun Cooking Class that combined cultural education with practical cooking experience. The program was designed to introduce participants to the rich traditions of Cajun culture while teaching them how to prepare classic Cajun dishes. The class was conducted with expert instruction on Cajun history, cooking techniques, and flavors. Participants engaged in a hands-on cooking session, where they prepared a traditional jambalaya, cornbread, and peach cobbler.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience
The cooking class was attended by 35 individuals, representing a diverse cross-section of the Lake Cumberland area community. Participants included adults of all ages, ranging from cooking novices to experienced home cooks looking to expand their culinary repertoire. The class attracted a mix of cultural enthusiasts, local foodies, and community members interested in learning new cooking techniques and exploring Cajun culture.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact
Based on participant feedback and evaluation surveys conducted after the event, the Cajun Cooking Class had a significant positive impact on attendees. 93% of participants reported an increased understanding of Cajun culture and its culinary traditions. 89% expressed greater confidence in their ability to prepare Cajun dishes at home. Many attendees noted that they had already tried recreating the recipes for their families, with several reporting they had introduced the dishes at family gatherings and potlucks, enhancing their social engagement and cultural appreciation. Additionally, 85% of participants indicated they were likely to attend future cultural cooking classes, demonstrating sustained interest in expanding their culinary and cultural knowledge. This program not only fostered cultural awareness but also strengthened community bonds by bringing people together around a shared love for cooking and learning.
