Public speaking skills are ranked number one among the skill sets of professionals. Other guiding factors for developing public speaking skills include leadership development, increased self- confidence, and ability to accept feedback. (University of California, 4-H Presentation Manual, revised 2016)
Oldham County 4-H involved over 329 members in the 4-H Public Speaking program with 314 presenting at the club level, 29 attending the county event, 9 attending the District Event and 5 Oldham County members qualifying for the State Event. Extension staff presented workshops focused on effective writing and presentations skills. Staff organized club and county Communication Events.
“4-H has shaped me in many ways. When I first joined I was a shy kid who did not talk to anyone. Eleven years later and I am comfortable speaking in front of groups of people. This is a place I never thought I would be. 4-H has built my character and has changed my life. It has taught me so many important things, like the value of family because 4-H has been a second family to me. 4-H took a 7 year old girl who didn’t talk and has turned me into a strong and independent woman”, shared by a senior 4-H member.
Giving presentations develop many life skills, including the ability to speak in front of a group, and organize ideas. The 4-H Communications Program is presented thru cooperation of Oldham County 4-H, Oldham County Extension, and participating Oldham County Schools.
