Community beautification project

Author: Paul Andrew Rideout

Planning Unit: Henderson County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Henderson County is growing.  New business’ are opening, new restaurants, and new road construction are all contributing to healthy economic growth.  Working closely with the local officials, Extension was called upon to help with beautification of the new I69 interchange.

Beginning in 2022, the city and county started looking at the impact of I69 and how it was going to effect traffic flow into the city.  Hwy 351 / I69 interchange likely will be a new entry point to downtown.

Working with local officials, state transportation Dept., and Stantec Design firm, the Henderson County Extension Agent for Horticulture Agent helped guide plant selection, grass selection, and overall design of a major intersection.  Criteria included cultivars adapted for our area, ease of maintenance, aesthetics, color, and availability.   After 2 years of planning, the project is close to completion.

Local officials have called upon Extension many times over the years, and Extension has come through every time with good information and education to help better our community.
