Major Program: Community Engagement
Plan of Work: Strengthening Knowledge and Awareness of Agriculture and Horticulture in Franklin County
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
The Jone’s family hosted the 2024 Farm City Field Day on their diversified multi generational farm. Vegetable production and Agritourism are their main farm enterprises supported by beef cattle, forages and some row crops. They also have other satellite agricultural enterprises to supplement the three generations that farm today.
This year’s Field Day was fairly unique as it focused solely on large scale vegetable production, highlighting the roughly seven acres in production. Stops included: History & Evolution of Happy Jack’s, Ecological Benefits of Farming , Vegetable Disease Management , Economics of Plasticulture and a Restaurateur's POV on serving Local Products. A major benefit from this year’s host was that all the sides came from the farm! Truly a farm to fork experience.
UK Health Care participated with their trailer & displays. They screened 39 attendees from age 18-84 for blood pressure, heart rate and BMI.
The targeted audience is both rural and urban as a way to share cutting edge research with local farmers and demonstrate new practices while educating the consumer on how their food & fiber is produced. The approximately 350 attendees were 52% female, 6% Black and 4% Asian.
The Waste-free Event produced 10lbs of trash, 26lbs of recycling and 123lbs of compostable material.
