Planning Unit: Clark County CES
Major Program: Family and Consumer Science
Plan of Work: Targeting Life Skills and Family Lives
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Clark County 4-H Agent offered two sessions of a four-day 4-H quilting day camp series this summer to thirteen youth. The development of life skills such as sewing has been shown to increase hand/eye coordination, improve critical thinking skills, develop creative thinkers and serve as an expressive art form (Rohmah et al., Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research, 2020). By learning to complete sewing projects youth develop confidence and a sense of accomplishment by completing new projects. The participating youth received 18 hours of instruction on sewing techniques, machine use and basic quilting background. At the conclusion of the program all youth indicated that they could:
-Identify parts of the sewing machine
-safely use the machine
-control the speed of the sewing machine
-thread the machine
-create quilting patterns
-properly baste a quilt
All of the youth indicated that they were interested in continuing to learn new sewing techniques and said they felt comfortable using a sewing machine in the future.
