Production of Tobacco GAP Training Video Modules as a Means of Delivering Annual GAP Training

Author: William Bailey

Planning Unit: Plant and Soil Sciences

Major Program: Tobacco

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The problem
All tobacco growers are required to attend tobacco GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) training annually in order to be able to market their tobacco crop.  Some tobacco growers may be unable to attend live in-person GAP trainings that are offered at several locations throughout Kentucky and Tennessee each year.

The educational program response
An online training program was developed through the efforts of GAP Connections (administrators of U.S. Tobacco GAP training program) and tobacco extension specialists in tobacco-producing states.

The participants/target audience
Tobacco growers that are required to have annual GAP training but may be unable to attend live in-person training events

Other partners (if applicable)
GAP Connections, other tobacco extension specialists in NC, GA, SC, and VA.

Program impact or participant response
There were 112 tobacco growers in Kentucky and Tennessee that received their GAP training in 2024 by means of viewing our on-line training modules and passing a short test after viewing each module.  Short term outcomes were that growers completing the online trainings were immediately credited with 2024 GAP Training and could market their 2024 tobacco crop.
