Outcome: Initial Outcome
The problem - To ensure the production of a safe and wholesome product for consumers, it is imperative that beef producers learn proper Beef Quality and Care Assurance (BQCA) techniques. Traditionally this educational curriculum has been delivered via videos and online modules. In recent years there has been interest from producers to learn these practices in a more hands-on manner, utilizing live animals when possible.
The educational program response - A hands on BQCA Field Day was held at Kentuckiana Livestock Market in Owensboro on September 12.
The participants/target audience - Producers interested in learning hands-on management techniques using BQCA protocols.
Other partners (if applicable) This program was delivered in partnership with the Kentucky Beef Council and the Kentucky Beef Network (KBN), and fellow UK Beef Extension specialists.
Program impact or participant response - Hands on activities including vaccine and injection techniques, tail bleeding, implanting (on actual cow ears provided by a local butcher), body condition scoring, feeder calf grading and genetic impacts on cattle care were demonstrated. Stations were set up throughout the stockyard facilities and attendees were divided into smaller groups which rotated among the different stations. UK Beef Specialists and the local KBN facilitator provided instruction at each station using live animals when appropriate and allowing participants to practice the various techniques. Although no formal survey was conducted, participants expressed overwhelming positive feedback on the effectiveness of the training.
