For individuals new to farming or those who have inherited family farms, the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain and operate equipment can be lacking. With the agricultural sector facing significant labor challenges, resulting in extended wait times for equipment servicing, the Trimble County agent requested an equipment selection and maintenance workshop. Similar programs in nearby counties have highlighted a need for more detailed information on tractors and equipment. Producers have identified general working knowledge, tractor operation, maintenance, and safety as key areas of interest. This information is crucial for operator safety, farm efficiency, and can often provide economic benefits.
To address these needs, Josh Jackson and Morgan Hayes collaborated with the Trimble County Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent and a local farmer and equipment dealer to host a Tractor/equipment Maintenance-Basics workshop in December 2023. The workshop, held at the extension office with equipment provided by a local producer, included discussions and demonstrations on:
- Tractor Sizing
- Tractor Safety
- Using the Tractor Manual
- Changing Oil and Fluids
- Replacing Filters
- Checking Tires and Lug Nuts
- Equipment Maintenance
Most of the participants aimed to save money by performing maintenance themselves, while others lacked family members to teach them these essential skills.
