In February 2024, I started a 4H Entomology club to help youth learn more about insects. I taught a few insect classes in 2023, specifically one at 4H Day Camp, and the youth were very interested. They had never had the opportunity to learn specifically about insects and the response was amazing. I decided to start an Entomology Club for 4H in February and it just wrapped up in June, in time for State Fair Entries. Throughout the past couple of months, participants learned the basics about insects, as well as more about the Insect Pinning project for State Fair. Participants collected bugs prior to each meeting and were then taught how to pin them. Some kids took the project very seriously and will be planning to enter their project this year. The other participants are still working on growing their insect collection to be entered next year. All 12 participants learned more about insects, how to pin and display them, and developed an appreciation for the different roles that insects play in the environment. Due to the success of this years club, it will be starting back up in August with even more opportunities for the youth!
