As of August 30, 2023, Kentucky has the sixth-highest obesity rate in the U.S., with 48.78% of its population affected. The state ranks second in obesity rates among adult men and 18th among adult women. Additionally, Kentucky is among the top seven states for physical inactivity, with 32% of residents not engaging in regular exercise. Research indicates that adopting healthy eating habits and regular physical activity can promote overall health and reduce chronic diseases.

To tackle these challenges, the Trimble County Extension Service launched the Step Into Nature hiking program. This initiative aimed to encourage consistent physical activity and an active lifestyle while enjoying the outdoors. Each hike included discussions on relevant health topics, such as the benefits of hiking and essential tips for outdoor activities, alongside pertinent UK Health Bulletins. The program was led by the Family and Consumer Science agent, with assistance from local landowners who provided hiking locations.

All 15 participants expressed that they learned the significance of physical activity while “stepping into nature” and discovering different areas of the county. Many noted the social and mental health benefits of the program, emphasizing the value of connecting with others.
