Master Gardener Plant Sale

Author: Lorilee Kunze

Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Natural Resources and the Environment

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Bullitt County is a community adjacent to Louisville and it is extremely hard to engage community members in educational events at the Extension office.  For the past decade, the Annual Master Gardener Plant Sale has an innovative and fun way to get new people in to Extension  and involved in other Extension Programs.

The Plant Sale itself is an excellent draw to the community and a great marketing tool   This past year the sale hosted 51 booths of local farmers, nurseries, artisans and entrepreneurs from Bullitt and surrounding counties.  23 Master Gardener Voluniteers worked the event, providing information about plants, ecology and upcoming events at Extension.  We had 2342 community members come to the event in person, with over 12,000 shares and impressions on social media.

This event is a fun way for people to be introduced to Extension and what we have to offer the community.  Each year we add new people to our mailing lists (53 this year), gain participants in other programming (such as art guild and 4H) and sign up new master gardener volunteers (2 this year, 11 over the last 8 years).
