Enhancing Beef Production

Author: Patrick Hardesty

Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Management and Marketing

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With approximately 12,000 beef cows, beef cattle income ranks second in the county.  To improve profits and sustainability, beef educational meetings were conducted in cooperation with the Taylor County Cattlemen’s Association.

To promote beef in the county, the Association cooked at the C & S, Mission Store customer appreciation, Murakami employee appreciation, Kentucky Christian School fundraiser, Bluegrass Stockyards customer appreciation, Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Diversity Festival, Ingersoll Rand employee appreciation, Southern States customer appreciation, Farm Credit Mid-America open house, and Taylor County FFA Feeding America.

The Taylor County Cattlemen’s Association hosted a Cattlemen’s Roundup with approximately 100 producers participating in the event.  Participants viewed new products from five vendors and educational sessions on culling cow decisions and retaining replacement heifers or selling as feeders...

Educational meetings were also held on Herd Health, Blending Resources:  Grain, Fuel and Feed, Managing Price Risk on Feeder Cattle, Focus on Your Soil Health and Preparing for the Hay Season:  Equipment Maintenance, Repairs and Settings.

The Taylor County Cattlemen’s Association also administers the CAIP & YAIP programs.  Sixty-seven people received funds in 11 investment areas for a total of $182,903.36 and the YAIP program with 10 youth receiving funding for a total of $7,559.84.  They also presented two high school seniors with a $750 scholarship and made donations to the Taylor County Fair Beef Show and both local FFA chapters for beef awards.

A local beef producer is currently serving on the state board for the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association.
