JR Master Gardeners

Major Program: Master Gardener

Plan of Work: Horticulture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In the late winter of 2018, the local homeschool group leader came to the Extension Office asking if the staff could put together something garden and nutrition related for their students. Beginning in March of 2018, the Family and Consumer Science agent, SNAP-ED assistant, and the ANR agent, started a JR Master Gardener Program with the homeschool group. In total 21 of 24 students passed the course. The curriculum utilized was from Texas A&M JR Master Gardener program (Learn, Grow, Eat, and Go and Health and Nutrition). Students learned about plant needs, plant parts, basic human nutrition, My Plate, planting a garden and taking care of it. Students also got to sample different foods while going through the course. While the students were learning and gaining experience in gardening and nutrition, parents were also doing the same. The SNAP-ED assistant ran a nutrition based course with parents to compliment what the students were learning. One major success of the program was having a special needs student learn how to operate a garden tiller. She was very shy to start with and didn’t like being in the outdoors for those sections of the program. By the end of the program she ran a garden tiller in the pumpkin patch. Also, most students/parents ended up with home gardens as well as a direct result of the program.
