Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

As always, the cooperative extension service strives to offer programs to meet current agriculture needs in the community we serve.  In the last couple of years, we’ve seen an increase in livestock being grazed on reclaimed mine land throughout Knott County.  With the increase of livestock, many producers are battling livestock loss due to predators such as coyotes and bears.  The agriculture agent has successfully worked with Southeast KY Sheep Producer Association hosting various workshops to educate producers on ways to prevent livestock loss due to predatorial reasons.  With such a great working relationship, the association president asked if I would be willing to help host a livestock predator control workshop. These workshops are set up to teach livestock owners techniques to control predator pressure on their farms. Together, we organized a full day workshop in the fall focusing on loss prevention and deepening the skills we had already been educating on.  Many of the classes for the day include expertise and knowledge from many groups including extension agents, KY division of fish and wildlife, trappers, and farmers. The event also included a share session for participants to discuss how they have been successful on their farm using different techniques, including livestock guard animals. The event had 22 participants from seven counties in attendance.  Many participants reported learning several different predator control techniques to help protect their livestock. With these classes, our farmers have many new tools to help protect their livestock which will in turn increase their profitability.
