4-H Sewing

Author: Stacey Potts

Planning Unit: Daviess County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Fostering Life Skills Education in Youth and Families

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

“Sewing is a discipline that helps develop self-esteem, confidence, focus, patience, fine motor skills, problem solving, process thinking and visualization. Additionally, sewing encourages creative ability” (The Creative Art of Sewing; www. NorthJersey.com; September 13, 2012).  Nine youth at Cravens Elementary School participated in a six-session after school sewing program where they made a pillowcase and the Go Green tote bag from Unit 1: Let’s Learn to Sew.  All nine of the participants had little to no experience with using a sewing machine.  Eight of the youth successfully finished their projects; the ninth was unable to finish due to illness.  The students practiced following instructions, learned the processes for operating the sewing machines, and to sew seams of set widths.  They also worked together, cooperatively shared, and helped one another.  One of the students said he was so glad he signed up for the class because normally he went home after school and played video games, but this program taught him how to make something.
