The Problem
Owsley County, KY, faces significant challenges with kindergarten readiness. Statistics indicate that many children in the area are not adequately prepared to start school, impacting their long-term educational success. Data from the Owsley County Head Start center reveals that only 35% of children are considered ready for kindergarten. Additionally, there is a substantial need for daycare services in the county, with many families lacking access to affordable and quality early childhood education.
The Educational Program Response
In response to these challenges, a new initiative called "Preschool in the Park" was launched. This program is designed to provide children aged 2.5-5 years old with opportunities to engage with their peers and practice developmentally appropriate skills. It also aims to educate parents on the importance of kindergarten readiness.
The Participants/Target Audience
The target audience for "Preschool in the Park" includes children aged 2.5-5 years old and their families. The program specifically focuses on families in Owsley County who may lack access to traditional preschool or daycare services. During the initial rollout, four children within the target age range participated, along with three families, including siblings who were also welcome to join.
Other Partners
The program was supported by various community partners, including the Owsley County Head Start center, local library, and early childhood educators. These partners provided resources, expertise, and support to ensure the success of the program.
Program Impact or Participant Response
"Preschool in the Park" had a positive initial impact on the participating children and families. During the first event, children learned about flags, various countries, patterns, music, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and pre-writing skills. Parents expressed appreciation for the program, noting the importance of understanding and supporting kindergarten readiness.
Initial observations suggest that the program effectively engaged children in meaningful educational activities while fostering a sense of community among families. As the program continues, it aims to expand its reach and impact, ultimately improving kindergarten readiness statistics in Owsley County.
