According to Kentucky County Health Rankings, the Breckinridge County health facts reflect 42% adults are obese, 31% report a lack of physical activity, and in the Kentucky 13.8% adults have diabetes. In a continued effort to increase awareness and improve individual wellness, the Breckinridge County Extension Service Family and Consumer Science program host and facilitate a monthly support group meeting to provide educational learning and support for families living with diabetes.
The monthly support group meetings provide learning sessions relating to A1C, diabetic medications, foot care, kidney care, eye care, nutrition, physical activity, and food preparation while offering a caring supportive environment. Guest speakers have included a local primary care physician, podiatrist, optometrist, pain management specialist, and nurse practitioner. Partnering agencies include Breckinridge Health, Inc., Hardinsburg Primary Care and the local health department. The local registered dietitian provides specific nutrition analysis for participants. A healthy recipe was shared by the FCS Agent to encourage an increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Extension publications and curriculum utilized include Plate it Up KY Proud!, the NEP calendar, Taking Ownership of Your Diabetes and American Diabetes Association resources. Average attendance has ranged from 10-15 participants. Post program surveys show that 82% of the participants agree or strongly agree they are more confident in managing their diabetes since attending the support group meetings. Also, 73% report they are having more healthy home-cooked meals. All agree or strongly agree the support group provides a safe, welcoming space for them to ask questions and share challenges about their diabetes management. Many report their favorite thing about the support group is meeting with others who also have diabetes and the helpful information and handouts that are shared. The Breckinridge County Diabetes Support Group has become a valued support system that fosters an environment of health and wellness for strengthening families in Breckinridge County.
