Fort Harrod First Aid and Emergency Preparedness

Planning Unit: Garrard County CES

Major Program: Emergency Disaster Preparedness

Plan of Work: Healthy Lifestyle and Life Skill Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

First Aid and Emergency Preparedness is a topic that many homemakers in the Fort Harrod Area wanted to become more knowledgeable on.  In moments of panic, it can be intimidating to spring into action due to fear of causing further harm, bystander effect, or just lack of preparedness.

In order to build confidence in the Fort Harrod Homemakers, the FCS Agents wanted to equip the group with knowledge and tools to be able to act quickly and effectively. An area wide program was held in Franklin County. Members of emergency management gave demonstrations on CPR, health department professionals presented on items to have in case of natural disaster and emergency, and time was given to ask questions. Participants enjoyed an educational and fun-filled night.

97% respondents reported increased knowledge on the subjects covered. 100% of respondents reported increased confidence to handle an emergency.   94% of respondents reported that they planned to share the information they received with others. Numerous positive responses were given about the night. One participant stated, “Great program and so helpful, both programs are very useful. Thank you!”.  Another person said, “Best training I've attended-ever. Been a homemaker for 40 years”.
