Program impact or participant response.

“Agriculture ranks among the most hazardous industries. Farmers are at very high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries; and farming is one of the few industries in which family members who often share the work and live on the premises, are also at risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries. According to CDC statistics, over 100 children are killed on farms each year in the United States. The Bourbon County Extension Office including the Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4-H Youth Development, Horticulture, Family and Consumer Science agents along with county SNAP-ED assistant worked to implement the Progressive Agriculture Foundation safety day to combat the issue. FRYSC coordinators from each of the schools attending were instrumental in the preparation and day of success of the program. The event was held on April 26, 2024, at the Bourbon County Fairgrounds for fourth grade students from four elementary schools with over 300 total students in attendance. Students were able to visit stations about safety in the areas of firearms, first-aid, bike, internet, tractor and PTO, food, home alone, and vaping education. Lunch for volunteers and teachers was provided by Bourbon County Farm Bureau and other community members. Of those students that attended, 89% indicated on an evaluation that they liked the day.  A few items that students indicated they would do to be safer were, don’t touch powerlines, pay attention to my surroundings, keep the safety on a gun, and make a family emergency plan.”
