Exploring Agriculture at Bowen Elementary

Author: Emilee Bryant

Planning Unit: Powell County CES

Major Program: Agriculture & Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Nutrition and Food Systems

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Second Grade students at Bowen Elementary complete only one science lesson a week, based on other requirements from KY education standards.  The Bowen Elementary teachers reached out to Powell County CES  to develop a monthly program to provide more meaning, hands-on science lessons for their students with the limited amount of instructional time available.

Each month, from January to May, all 2nd graders at Bowen Elementary completed a school enrichment lesson focused on exploring the KY agriculture industry.  Lessons were adapted from the TeachAgKY curriculum, and 4-H curriculum.

36 youth were able to complete 5 separate agriculture lessons, totaling 7 hours of education.  Each month explored a different piece of the Agriculture industry including Livestock, Dairy Production, Soil Science, Vegetable Production, and where our food comes from.

Bowen Elementary teachers and Powell CES plan to continue this program each year with 2nd grade students.
