Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas that can seep into a home from the rocks beneath it. Radon is the second leading cause for lung cancer. This gas can be detected in a home very easily by using a simple home radon test kit.
The FCS Agent attended an online webinar about radon. This webinar explained what radon gas is, how it gets into a home, how to test for it, and how to mitigate the problem if it's found. The FCS Agent partnered with the Boyle County Health Department to host a Radon Awareness Workshop where the public could be educated on the risk of radon exposure and how to test for it. Radon test kits were given out to all participants who attended the workshop.
Follow-up (to be continued)
One participant received 3 test kits to test properties on their land. Radon gas was found to be at an unacceptable level and needed to be mitigated. This family's home is scheduled for a mitigation system to be installed in the near future. This participant was very grateful to have attended the workshop and learned about her risk and how to test for this harmful gas.
