4-H Camp: A transformative experiences for both youth and volunteers

Author: Elijah Wilson

Planning Unit: Cumberland County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: 4-H Volunteer Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

4-H Camp provides transformative experiences for both youth and volunteers, fostering personal growth, skill development, and community building. For youth, the camp environment offers a unique opportunity to explore new activities, develop leadership skills, and build lasting friendships. Through hands-on learning and team-based challenges, campers gain confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility. Activities such as archery, canoeing, and science workshops not only teach practical skills but also inspire a love for learning and outdoor adventures.

Volunteers at 4-H Camp, often former campers themselves, play a crucial role in guiding and mentoring the youth. They gain valuable experience in leadership and program management, enhancing their ability to work with diverse groups and manage complex logistics. The sense of fulfillment and pride volunteers feel from contributing to the campers' growth is profound. They witness firsthand the positive changes in campers, from increased self-esteem to improved social skills.

Both youth and volunteers leave 4-H Camp with a deeper connection to their community and a strengthened commitment to personal and collective growth. The camp experience cultivates a supportive network, where lifelong friendships are formed and a passion for giving back is ignited, ensuring the enduring success of 4-H programs. In the summer of 2023, 82 people comprised of youth and adult volunteer attend 4-H from Cumberland County, the largest attendance since 2007.
