Author: Jennifer Bridge

Planning Unit: Meade County CES

Major Program: Active Living and Health Promotions General

Plan of Work: Improved Physical and Mental Health

Outcome: Initial Outcome

As programs expand,  the need for trained volunteers is key to longevity and success.  To increase the number of programs related to health and wellness, extension specialist adapted an ambassador program from a partner land-grant university.  Meade County was selected as one of fifteen pilot programs to implement the program on the local level.  The ambassador program requires those interested to complete a questionnaire, go through volunteer screening and a background check as well as complete 40 hours of instruction in health and wellness training, successfully pass an exam over the materials presented and once graduated, give back 40 hours of volunteer time to the FCS program.  Meade County had seven begin the program with three successfully graduating.  All three ambassadors are currently completing projects and payback hours.  They have set up displays and manned tables with information related to personal safety and general health and wellness..  One ambassador started a program called M-Power.  M-Power is a health and wellness program for families with special needs.  The group meets weekly and participates in low level stress and exercise including walking, stretching, using stretch bands, and so on.  She is evaluating the needs of the group and adapting as participation increases.   More to follow on her success and challenges in the upcoming months.
