Relevance

A leader can be anyone who provides guidance to reach goals, sets a vision, and brings direction and focus to those who follow. Leadership is critical at a number of levels, from the internal management structure of organizations to project managers, team leaders, and those who inspire throughout a community. Thriving communities may require a large number of leaders willing to take on these guidance roles. And yet, it can be a challenge to identify new leaders or to encourage leaders to step up to the role without first building leadership capacity.

Response

The 2nd  Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association (KEHA) Leadership academy was held in March 1-3, 2023. KEHA’s goal for the academy was to strengthen leadership skills for emerging leaders within the organization and increase the pool of leaders available to hold county, area, and state level elected and appointed positions. Participants were asked to develop a “payback” plan to complete at least 40 hours of volunteer service within 12 months. They were encouraged to start something new or rebuild an existing program in the FCS extension homemaker organization. Taking on new officer leadership positions was highly encouraged.

Results

So far we’ve received payback report forms from 11 of the 19 participants who were nominated and selected to attend. Those report forms detail a total of 1,785.20 hours spent in leadership service. That averages out to 162 hours per person reporting.

Also indicating the success of the program is the rate of people taking on NEW leadership responsibilities. Six of those reporting specifically shared that they accepted a NEW leadership role, such as county president or area board member. One ran for state board and was selected for the position. All of those reporting have listed a current KEHA leadership role at some level on their payback form.

Public Value Statement

The KEHA Leadership Academy appears to be enhancing leadership skills and increasing member confidence to step up to higher leadership roles.
